Total Embarassment

The following is presented without much comment.  This is what happens when old officials who have no idea how to manage a basketball game get together and work a varsity HS game.  This is also what happens when there are no standards for officiating. The bad news: nothing will be done about it.

Do you know those guys?

Yes, of course I do.

Why do you say that nothing will be done about it? The guy who smiles and jokes with #34 will still get games?

These guys looked like they were afraid to call the game the way it should have been called. For old-time referees, they have flawed judgement & flawed mechanics. Several of those fouls were Intentional Fouls. Lastly, they are using the mechanic for Holding Fouls, when they are clearly Pushing Fouls. Like most Refs with little to no experience, they blow - show a fist - and then guess what kind of foul they just observed. Come on guys...

It was made clear, early in the game, that White #34 was not there to play Basketball. He was playing Football, and should have been removed from the game by the Officials, or even his own Coach. WTF.

Guys, personal attacks by name, any profanity, and ANY racial things will be deleted. I apologize to any who saw some of the unmoderated postings from "Anonymous" users. Don't be cowards. Comments are now Moderated. I will answer the questions when I get time--the remaining comments are not quite right.

The referees were not afraid to call fouls, they were oblivious. There is no accountability--the newspaper today showed that quite clearly. The school has apparently gone Sandusky mode, and the officials association has become North Korea with respect to effectiveness and public credibility; all of which is very unfortunate. For the Cartmell comment, he could ref a game from a wheelchair. He's Will Hunting. Too bad he is not used as a resource more.

Do you think there were flagrant fouls or just intentional fouls?

#1 was an intentional foul. #2 was goofy, they missed a clear push on Red 20, then White 42 did a frustration foul, so I'd have done a common foul with "That doesn't happen again," to the player. #3 was a clear flagrant foul and the worst of all of them, a forearm swung into the face/head with no chance to play the ball. #4 was another stupid play, and would have been intentional on #42 for the two-hand push without any basketball intent. #5 was a flagrant foul. #6 was another dirty play, but because the official had no angle due to his positioning, it may have looked like a regular foul. My scorecard had White 32 ejected after #3, and I would have thought hard about ejecting White 42 after #4, but probably would not have done it. I would have definitely had very strong and direct words for White 42 and the Connell coach, at a minimum. Out of all that, #5 and #6 would not have occurred, and there would be no YouTube video.

I just had an argument with my husband about some of these calls. He of course defends the big guy saying you have to be big to play under the net. But I say, you don't have to be a bully. You can tell clearly that he is using his "muscle" to flatten these kids. And # 5 foul could have seriously hurt that other kid. If I were a parent of one of the players clothes-lined, I'd be doing something about it right about now. Think that school can handle a multi-million dollar lawsuit for allowing a football player to play basketball as rough as he would football, just because he's big?

If a big basketball player uses his feet to establish position, everything is great. As soon as big players stop moving and start wrestling for position, you have problems. But don't confuse "strong and skilled" with dirty play. The video shows a kid purposefully swing a forearm into the head and neck area of the opponent at least twice. He never used his feet. That is not basketball or football. It is cowardly, dangerous, and wrong. If that happened to my kid, I'd probably have been near or on the floor addressing it, but considering the WIAA has banned booing from games, I'd love to hear how the school and officials are participating in Just Play Fair.

Great job analyzing what the appropriate call should have been.

What would be an appropriate response by the Official's Association? What should the repercussions be for the officials involved?

George Jackson said...

It depends on what the goals of the Association are. I don't think this aligns with the goals of the WOA or the WIAA, though.

Why don't you get some stones and take care of bidness?
